Action director Chad Stahelski has recently shared insights about an alternative conclusion that was filmed for John Wick: Chapter 4. In this fourth installment of the John Wick series, Keanu Reeves reprised his role as the renowned assassin, but fans were left disheartened by the seemingly fatal outcome for his character. Nevertheless, due to the movie’s triumph both critically and financially, Lionsgate is enthusiastic about having Reeves and Stahelski return for at least one more film.
Although the most recent entry in the John Wick saga might seem to conclude the story, Stahelski, who has expressed his eagerness for more John Wick content in the past, has now unveiled a way for the character’s return through an alternate ending. This alternate ending depicts John Wick standing by his own grave. During his appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Stahelski revealed:
“Yes, surprisingly something as ordinary as that. However, as you gain more experience in directing, you become more confident and mature. Instead of resorting to my usual instinct of throwing tantrums, making threats, and causing chaos, I’ve learned that considering the audience’s perspective is essential. You can’t predict the emotional impact, so I’m always open to experimentation. But when you have the resources, time, and research, you should stick to your convictions.”

Stahelski continued by disclosing that the test audiences didn’t connect with the concept presented by the alternate ending:
“We tried that approach, and those around us questioned it, which is fair. I had some time to spare, so we decided to shoot it – a scene revealing John and such. My only request was to test both versions. I wanted to see and was curious myself. Deep down, I knew the correct path, but I thought, why not? Let’s test it and see what happens. We did, and the audience reacted strongly. Even before the credits finished rolling, people were responding vehemently. It felt quite reminiscent of Hollywood.”
Will Chad Stahelski & Keanu Reeves Make a Comeback in John Wick: Chapter 5?
In earlier discussions about potential sequels, Stahelski conveyed to The Hollywood Reporter, “For now, Keanu and I are taking a break. We’re giving John Wick some time off. I’m sure the studio has a plan. If the audience loves it and the excitement continues, then we’ll take a moment to consider.”
He added, “Oddly, the Wick films always get released last in Japan, like three months later. If the pattern holds, we’ll embark on a Japanese tour and release the movie in September. Keanu and I will journey to Tokyo, settle into the Imperial Hotel Scotch Bar, and deliberate. We’ll enjoy a couple of 20-year-old whiskies and scribble down ideas on napkins. If those ideas resonate, perhaps we’ll craft a new film.”
Irrespective of future chapters, the John Wick narrative will persist through the upcoming Peacock spinoff series, The Continental, which delves into the origins of the distinctive assassins’ hotel. Furthermore, there’s the forthcoming spinoff film, Ballerina, featuring Ana De Armas and potentially showcasing Reeves in a cameo role.
